I found this too late for this holiday season, but Danish Schnapps Recipes seems to have all the documentation down for making your own schnapps. Skol!

Been away for a while for various reasons, but I think we're pretty much back now. In fact, this could be a pretty active week for posting. On Saturday my nephew, Peter, is getting married. But, more important, I'm catering the rehearsal dinner with my sister. Here's the menu:

I've been blown away over the past few weeks by the quality and quantity of content being put out there for all by eGullet in their new Culinary Institute. Incredible stuff, well worth perusal and bookmarking by the experienced and beginner cook alike. However I couldn't stop laughing at this segue of courses: Vegetarian Cooking for Everyone followed by Pit Roasting a Pig. Priceless.

Tonight we had hamburgers. And then I read that the USDA announced today a recall of over three quarters of a million pounds of meat products from Stampede Meat. It’s a Class I recall due to suspected E. Coli contamination (health officials concluded the recalled product may be linked to five
E. coli O157:H7 illnesses in Minnesota, Kansas and Michigan). According to the FSIS recall notice:
The products subject to recall were produced between March 17 and March 22, 2003, and bear the establishment code “EST. 19113” inside the USDA mark of inspection. The products were distributed to restaurants, institutions and retail stores nationwide. The products were also distributed to consumers through door-to-door sales. Additionally, the products were distributed to institutions in Canada.

ConAgra Poultry Company, an Athens, Ga., establishment, is voluntarily recalling approximately 129,000 pounds of fresh chicken that may contain glass, the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Food Safety and Inspection Service announced today. Please, read today’s recall notice for details, but the recall effects chicken shipped to Florida, Georgia, New York, North Carolina and South Carolina.

Bruce has a new look, and I like it. Smooth, crisp — and that nekkid chicken is fantastic! The only tweak I’d suggest is to include a count of the links included in each of the link categories. Unless you know what the site is about, you wouldn’t know what a rich resouce it truly is when you first encounter it. Yes, the old design was cluttered with the volume of static links. But it’s that cornucopia of links right there in front of you that makes Sauté Wednesday the “go to” site you like to go to, even if it is only Tuesday.

An incredible treasure trove of Japanese home cooking: Yasuko-san's Home Cooking. Yasuko-san's father, used to say “You eat local cuisine and you'll not get sick.” A wise man indeed.
